UPDATE: Note that we’ve had to move it due to the Shebeen being triple-booked that night. We are just a block East and around the corner, at 303 Columbia street around the corner from Cordova at the On The Edge gastropub.

Welcome Shebeen alumnus Wesley Regan as our presenter for the month of April! Note that our meeting’s been pushed back a week from the usual Third Monday for flu-related reasons; all better now!

When it comes to social media no one is an expert, and everyone is an expert. The effectiveness of social media tools to create lasting social change has become the gorilla in the room to social media advocates eager to pronounce a new age in communications. The jury is still out. In fact, the jury is also the defendant, judge, media, lawyers and plaintiff.  But there have been some proven benefits and some tricks discovered in the brief time social media has been adopted into mainstream communications strategies. Wes aims to bring the mystique and hyperbole of social media down to earth, exploring its practical uses for environmental, political and social activism, and recounts some of his personal experiences on the social media frontier.

Wesley Regan has worked in marketing and communications since 2004, primarily in health and wellness and community economic development. He is currently the Communications Liaison at Building Opportunities with Business, a community economic development non-profit group active in Vancouver’s inner-city since 2005, and is the Industry Trends Blogger for Thirdi Software, a Yaletown based internet marketing and eCommerce firm. His commentary on technology, social media and economic development in Vancouver has also been featured in Techvibes.

Deadlines in the monitor may be closer than they appear

My ten-week Blogging for Writers course begins online 7-8:30pm Wednesday, April 21st 6:30-8 Tuesday, May 18th and runs subsequent Tuesdays 7-8:30 and once a week for a total of ten weeks. You don’t need any blogging experience; we’ll build the blog right in the first class. You do need a computer with a mic, so you can join the Skype conversation, or you need an ability to type almost as fast as you think so you can textSkype and keep up. And, obviously, an internet connection of better than dialup speeds.

Blogging for Writers

Learn how to get the most out of blogs for promotion, sales, networking and (unexpectedly) to improve your writing.

In this hands-on workshop we’ll  cover setting up a blog, connecting with and managing an audience, using the blog for promotion and sales, and how a blog can make you a better writer, working our way through writers’ exercises and gathering feedback from the class. Be prepared to participate!

The discipline of a daily blogger is a prerequisite to developing a body of work that functions as your online portfolio. Use your blogging as a tool to develop a powerful, confident voice and tackle writing challenges in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Includes exercises and benchmarks to help you analyze your progress and keep your work growing even after the class ends.

I’ve offered this in abbreviated form before; this will be the first complete course, as opposed to an afternoon or a day’s work. There WILL be homework, and it WILL be checked (in fact, it’s due 24 hours before the next class, so I have time to check all the work).

Interested in writing crime fiction or mystery novels but feeling unprepared for conveying the fine details of investigation and forensics? Join Chris Mathieson, Executive Director of the Vancouver Police Museum, as he introduces you to policing and the forensic sciences. Bring your questions, and he’ll do his best to answer them.

The Vancouver Police Museum is an independent non-profit organization and registered charity dedicated to telling the history of lawlessness and law enforcement in Vancouver. It also happens to be housed in Vancouver’s former city morgue and Analyst’s lab. In addition to its many popular programs for children, it also offers adult oriented tours on the history of vice crime (Sins of the City) and has recently announced a workshop series called “Forensics for Adults” that explores topics such as forensic pathology, blood spatter and ballistics.

About our presenter: In addition to being Executive Director of the Police Museum, Chris has also been a blacksmith, a philosopher, a university mascot and a neuroscientist. Mind you, he claims not to be as interesting as that sounds.

Help us celebrate the slate but always-great Duthie Books, one of the world’s great independent booksellers. Sadly, after more than a half a century of informed and impassioned involvement in the literary world, Duthie’s last location will be shutting its doors at the end of February.

Come out and reminisce and help us celebrate a great bookstore and an intellectual institution. This is a chain invitation, so pass it along to all who may be interested, either by copying it into an email, pointing out this blog post, or by inviting people by using the link in the sidebar on Facebook. Half of the Vancouver literati used to work there, buy there, or just try to chat up people in the Cellar (not as filthy as it sounds, outsiders!).

We will be accepting book donations for charity! All books and $5 from each ticket sold will go to the Stratcona One to One Literacy program. Keep books alive!

There will be many surprises there. Don’t forget to wear black! Full mourning dress preferred. Celia Duthie will be our guest of honour.

If you have a collection of old Duthie Bookmarks, please bring them in. They’ll be photographed for posterity and the best one will win a prize.

Ex-Duthieites are encouraged to attend, moderately encouraged to get maudlin, strongly encouraged to get into storytelling, and absolutely COMPELLED to get into the whiskey.

Come out and share your reminiscences of the deceased, and toast the memory of a fine, upstanding bookstore who never turned away an intellectual in need of brain food or met an obscure literary magazine it didn’t like. God, I’m getting weepy just thinking about it!

Wednesdays just got a little more literate in Vangroover, as Sean Cranbury of Books on the Radio organizes a new literacious salon every Wednesday in February: the Real Vancouver Writers’ Series. Save time: put it in your calendar now and avoid guilt-ridden “I shoulda’s” later. You can see the entire lineup for the full month on the website, and it’s extremely highly bitchin, to say the least (which is never my first choice; I’ve never gotten over getting paid by the word. As you can tell).

Real Vancouver Writers Series at the W2 Culture + Media House

Located at 112 East Hastings Street across from the refurbished Woodwards Building in Downtown Vancouver

The Real Vancouver Writers Series consists of 4 weekly events showcasing local Vancouver writers, publishers and creative literary artists at the W2 Culture + Media House.

These evenings are designed to show the city and the world real and diverse Vancouver culture and real creative individuals in the literary and publishing communities at a time when the eyes of the world are on our city.

Countless millions of people will want to know what real Vancouver culture looks like.

We are determined to take the opportunity to show the world just how amazing, diverse, talented and fun our literary and publishing culture is!

These events will occur every Wednesday during February beginning at 7pm.

Each night will showcase local writers doing short readings their work and/or interacting with a moderator, taking questions from the audience and will include book sales, signings, a multi-media component, music, cash bar, raffles and give-aways.

Every night will consist of writers that will give the in-house audience a glimpse of the variety of cultures, ethnicities, forms and skills of writers living and working in Vancouver.

It will showcase the writers, their books, their publishers and other support structures within the local community and the larger culture and publishing communities.

In conjunction with Books on the Radio and Geist Magazine.
