The decorative and illustrious Sean Cranbury of BooksOnTheRadio is our presenter, and the topic is the controversial New Ideas, Opportunities, Communities: Living with Book Publishing 3.0. He’s even posted a list of recommended readings for keeners (which I’d better at least skim, eh?).

2009 was the year that Book Publishing came crashing into the present.

The digital revolution could no longer be kept at bay as this traditional industry was assailed on all sides.

The true revolutionaries didn’t loot and pillage, however – they leapt into action and quickly built opportunities for publishers, book professionals, writers and readers to come together and talk about these changes and to create the dialog around the changes to come.

The revolutionaries turned from a traditionally passive mode to one of activity and demonstration.

In this installment of the Shebeen Club, Sean Cranbury will discuss how the digital revolution has created opportunities for creative and passionate individuals to demonstrate their ideas, open up dialog and build new communities.

Vancouver has become a focal point for new ideas that are transforming the industry.  Bookcamp Vancouver demonstrated this nicely.

Sean will also discuss the increasing impact of social media technologies on book marketing, writer/reader relationship and its potential to turn publishing workflows upside down.

That’s the day AFTER our fabulous Shebeen Club Pre-Holiday Party, which will be the world’s greatest warmup for the launch of Darren and Julie’s book, Friends with Benefits.

Friends with Benefits is a guide to social media marketing, from two of the best in the business.

In any disagreement among social mediaites in Vangroover, I’ll be right there, taking the low road, while Darren and Julie will generally be leading a pied piper train on the high road. They are total professionals who have been making a living at social media marketing since before Facebook was a twinkle in an undergraduate’s eye. And since they’ve been doing it while globetrotting, they obviously know a thing or two about work/life balance as well.

[it’s practically beneath the Granville Bridge, so you can get to it with ease from anywhere downtown, either by bus or take the little aquabus across to the Island for dinner and hit the gallery after]

BookCamp Vancouver Opens Registration

BookCamp Vancouver, a collaborative Unconference inspired by BookCamp Toronto, will take place October 16th at SFU Harbour Centre. Registration is open now, and a full day ticket is absolutely free. Given the interest in this, I suggest you sign up sooner rather than later; there’s also a spot on your registration form to pitch a session if you’d like to lead one.

BookCamp Vancouver is a user-generated unconference that brings print publishers, educators, community builders and the tech community together – for free! BookCamp Vancouver is an opportunity to explore the present and future of books and book-like technologies. It’s open to anyone interested in the publishing industry and the potential dynamics of the reader/creator/publisher relationship.

Join us for a day of sharing new ideas, radical notions and engaging conversation! We’ll consider the future of the Book as an object; examine its ongoing role as a delivery mechanism for stories, information and entertainment; and examine how publishers can leverage themselves for success in the digital age.

Participants and self-selected guests will choose the agenda for the day, forming breakup groups to discuss and potentially create future book technologies, workflows, and grand schemes. Lend your passion and expertise to Bookcamp Vancouver by volunteering to facilitate a session.

Our plan is for this to be a day of talking and doing – of rolling up the proverbial shirt sleeves and tinkering with the publishing mechanism. We’re inviting authors, typographers, designers, printers, technologists, booksellers, literary agents, publishers and geeks of every stripe to come along and consider if and how technology can transform and perhaps improve on The Book.
