Whee! We’re back!

That’s right, we’re back, bitches! For ONE NIGHT ONLY, the Shebeen Club returns to the back corner of the Shebeen at 7pm Tuesday, May 27 for drinks and eats and catching up on what we’ve all been doing in the what, six? eight? months since last we met.

Heading into our ninth year of existence, I’m sure we have a lot to share and boast and bitch about. I, personally, have some SOOPER EXCITING news that I am saving for the night. There’s no point emailing and asking; I won’t tell you. You gots to put your butt in a chair at the actual event.

It’s high time we Shebeened again! I hereby invite you and your literary homies to the May 2014 meeting of the Shebeen Club, one of Vancouver’s longest-lived literary gatherings. Bring your latest work, your attitude, and your ravenous thirst (for knowledge, of course!) to the Shebeen at 7pm on Tuesday, May 27.

Who knows, you might end up reading some lovely poetry, like Rik Mayall here and his highly supportive audience!

FLAME NEWS:

Last 2011 holiday season THE FLAME CHRISTMAS SPECIAL aired on Shaw TV and was watched by a whopping 70 000 viewers. It was such a tremendous success that we’ve partnered once again with the good folks at Metro Vancouver to produce a 2012 edition of THE FLAME CHRISTMAS SPECIAL!

WE ARE NOW accepting true story pitches that revolve around the Christmas/Holiday season for this television show. Whether your story is traditional, secular, multi-cultural, funny, confusing or poignant… We want to hear them!

HOW TO PITCH YOUR STORY:

1. For the purposes of this television broadcast format, all stories for this show must take LESS than seven minutes to tell. No Exceptions!
“Brevity is the soul of wit.”

2. All pitch submissions must encompass the entirety of your story arc for it to be considered. We need to see the beginning, middle and end of your true tale from start to finnish. 500 words or so will suffice.

3. We are scheduled to shoot in early November in front of a live audience, so make sure that you are available. We ask that you understand that space is very limited for this project and unfortunately we only have room for a few. So dig deep and bring on your best holiday season stories!

4. Before you pitch your story, please take a few moments to watch a few of the holiday stories that were featured in last years ‘Christmas Flame’ to give you an idea of what we’re looking for.

Fucking Writers’ Conferences: how do they work?

This is our April topic. I can drop an F bomb in it because the speaker said it was okay, and that was because the speaker is me and I’m the one who puts the PRO in profanity, right? Damn straight.

This month we’re on the 4th Tuesday instead of the 3rd Monday, but oh well, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, eh? And we’ll be starting at 6pm instead of 7, and it’s all cash, $20 a head for the set meal. Everybody gets the earlybird price this month.

There’s been a bit of chaos around Shebeen Global HQ this month, but we’re finally organized. We’ll be in the Revel Room upstairs again, from 6-8 or so. This way you don’t have to grab a snack before the meeting!

I’ll be speaking about how to get the most from a writer’s conference, and having been on the board of a couple and an attendee and speaker at more than I can count without taking off my shoes, I have a lot to share. If you do too, we want to hear from you.

And don’t forget the Women&Words conference this coming Friday and Saturday. Guess who’ll be speaking there as well? [insert smiley of your choice, as I am far too bloody dignified to use them myself]

Just a quick note to let you know about an amazing literary event next Saturday – Vancouver Women Read @ W2 Utopia Festival.

Curated by Nikki Reimer and Alex Leslie in conjunction with the W2 Real Vancouver Writers’ Series this is some real next level programming.

Nikki and Alex have curated 5 Vancouver writers whose performances will be punctuated by musical appearances by First Nations artists such as Tanya Tagaq, JB The First Lady and cello prodigy Cris Derkson.

AND – The keynote address will be given by international electroclash sensation Peaches.

Needless to say it’s going to be fairly incredible.
