2009 was the year that Book Publishing came crashing into the present.

The digital revolution could no longer be kept at bay as this traditional industry was assailed on all sides.

The true revolutionaries didn’t loot and pillage, however – they leapt into action and quickly built opportunities for publishers, book professionals, writers and readers to come together and talk about these changes and to create the dialog around the changes to come.

The revolutionaries turned from a traditionally passive mode to one of activity and demonstration.

In this installment of the Shebeen Club, Sean Cranbury will discuss how the digital revolution has created opportunities for creative and passionate individuals to demonstrate their ideas, open up dialog and build new communities.

Vancouver has become a focal point for new ideas that are transforming the industry.  Bookcamp Vancouver demonstrated this nicely.

Sean will also discuss the increasing impact of social media technologies on book marketing, writer/reader relationship and its potential to turn publishing workflows upside down.

Yes, join Lorraine Murphy, founder, president, and diva of the Shebeen Club along with other Vangroover literati for the launch of the first annual Reading is Sexy Calendar!

From the Facebook invite:

Eat, drink and be merry all in celebration of literacy and the fact that I AM MAKING MY DEBUT IN A CALENDAR!!!! (along with the sizzlingly sexy Monique Trottier, Lori & Richard Yearwood, Patrick Tubajon, Raul Pacheco, Ian A Martin, Rayne, Lorraine Murphy, Mark Leiren-Young, Monica Hamburg and Ian Ferguson). Special thanks to Robert Shaer and Tris Hussey, whose photography has made this calendar a piece of art.

And aside from using this as an excuse to convince my literary buds to peel off the layers for the camera, it was done in the name of literacy. Thats right, we shot this calendar to raise money for The International Dyslexia Association.

So come hang out with us at my favourite wine and cheese bistro, enjoy a drink and some nibblies, get your calendars signed by the models, listen to a few of our authors reading from their works, and for those of you that are a bit more daring, dance the night away with moi.

The event is free and everyone is welcome. The more, the merrier!

By the way, the super-sexy book I’m reading is a special calf-bound book of whiskies of the world, specially borrowed from the bartender for the occasion. I had a couple of Vanity Fairs in my bag, but they weren’t quite as posh and retro-looking as that book. Also, I highly recommend posing for calendars: the drinks are free!

Got this via Facebook. Sounds like a terrific event and a good cause.

As a born socialist and also a Canadian who’s had cancer, I’d like to let you know that no, BC Medical does not cover all your costs. In fact, for many long months I was on an immune system booster that cost $1700 an injection, and had to be taken twice a month; it was not covered until my life savings had been eaten up completely and I was forced onto medical welfare. Even ambulance rides are no longer covered, remember. And when you are ill and in treatment, there are many small things, like neck pillows, special meals, and support services, that can make all the difference between enduring and living.

$20 for poetry, community, a good time, a burger and a beer. Can’t beat that with a shoplifted copy of On the Road. Geddit?

A BENEFIT FOR FELLOW POET MARC CREAMORE
Pandora’s Collective and folks in the poetry and music community are holding a Benefit for our friend Marc Creamore, who is battling lung cancer. Marc has been an active part of Vancouver ‘s poetry community for many years. Join us in support of Marc and his family at this evening of poetry, music, spoken word and shared memories.

Tickets: $20 at the door includes entertainment, a burger with fries and beer. After costs, all proceeds go directly to Marc and his family.
There will also be door prizes, and Marc’s published poetry books will be available for sale.

Shebeen Club Pre-Holiday Party Monday, November 23

A quick note to let you know that our November meeting is coming up, and there will be no meeting in December, because the Shebeen is going to be booked for a holiday party.

So, our meeting is this coming Monday, 7pm at the Shebeen. As always $20 buys you a drink and dinner, and the companionship of other literary types: publishers, journalists, authors, editors, illustrators, and bloggers.

Because this is our Holiday party, you are invited to bring your favorite piece of holiday writing and, if you like, read an excerpt. This is the ONLY night of the year we have anything approaching an Open Mic Night, as I was traumatized by an Amateur Talent Show in my youth and have yet to recover. It can be something you wrote, published, edited, or just read and enjoyed. I’ll take down all the titles and authors and put up a list of them afterwards.

Yes, you may wear your reindeer sweater, but we do not guarantee that everyone won’t go all Oscar Wildean/fashion critic on you.

What? Survival, Thrival, Arrival: work/life balance for writeaholics

When? 7-10pm (note new time) Monday, September 21st

Where? The Shebeen, behind the Irish Heather, 210 Carrall Street

Why? Because Kathrin has lived the struggling writer reality and come out on top, and it’s always a good idea to learn from the best!

How? Much? $20 new pricing reflects some new options and offerings. Cash is king, baby.

I met Kathrin something like a decade ago at the Surrey International Writer’s Conference, where we bonded over Harvey Wallbangers and Mae West quotations. Back then I knew she was smart, knew she was funny, knew she was determined, but I didn’t know just how successful she would ultimately become (or I would have let her pay for the drinks). The Shebeen Club is very pleased to invite Kathrin to speak about her journey as a writer and independently-published author of From Survival to Thrival: how to catch the boat to your successful, thriving life, and to pick up whatever tips we can about staying as sane as her while juggling professional priorites, staying true to ourselves as writers, and trying to keep the wolf (or at least the urban coyote) from the door.

Bring: a notebook, a pen, a backup pen (you should know this by now!) and a stock of your very best Mae West stories. It’s going to be a fun night as well as a learning experience.
