BizBooks Moving Online Event this Saturday

Bizbooks is one of the best independent stores in the city (hell, it’s one of the ONLY ones left! but it was always great) and now they’re closing their Cordova street location and moving to virtual space. Come out Saturday and help them wrap things up in style.

Well, we are now in August and after 14 years, our time on Cordova Street is drawing to a close. We have loved being here, the community, our great neighbours, our fantastic landlords, our wonderful customers. To all of you who were so much a part of this great run thanks and please come on by Saturday, August 14th as we say “Thanks for the Cordova Street Memories ” and celebrate both our time here as well as our new “Online and… On Location” adventure!

The Biz Books “Moving Online and On-Location Party will include:

Who: Us and the Siren of Howe Sound, Heather Haley

What: A night of multimedia delights celebrating the recent publication of Three Blocks West of Wonderland.

When: Monday, August 16, from 7pm-9pm

Where: The Shebeen, behind the Irish Heather, 212 Carrall Street

Join us as we celebrate the release of Heather Haley’s latest book of poetry, Three Blocks West of Wonderland. Heather is both the digital AND actual troubadour of the West Coast, from Bowen Island to Venice Beach, and for the first time she’ll be bringing her multimedia performance experience to the Shebeen Club. There will be poetry. There will be prose. There will be beauty. There may be song. And there WILL be videopoems, a dynamic new genre that seems to have sprung fully formed from the forehead of the Siren of Howe Sound herself.

We’re very proud to help celebrate a pivotal local literatus’s latest launch! And that’s my allotment of “L’s” for the week right there.

Poet, author, musician and media artist Heather Haley pushes boundaries by creatively integrating disciplines, genres and media. Published in numerous journals and anthologies including Geist and The Verse Map of Vancouver, her poetry collections Sideways (Anvil Press) and Three Blocks West of Wonderland (Ekstasis Editions) have been described as “supple and unusual,” “brawny and uncompromising.”

Last Saturday I was at the Vancouver launch of Heather Haley’s newest book, Three Blocks West of Wonderland, which was quite the event: electronically modified cello sounds, cafe poetry from Acme to Waazuubee, and a reading by JennFarrell were all on the menu, not to mention the world premiere of two of Heather’s videopoems and enough of her great poetry readings to make an encore compulsory.

I’m a staunch Heather Haley fan, but I have to single out Jenn Farrell here, for two reasons: one, her reading was, as I said to her that night, “stone cold awesome,” and two, she’s having a book launch of her own this Thursday at the Railway Club and it features my favorite thing: fancy dress!

We hope to see you all the launch of Jenn Farrell’s new collection of short stories THE DEVIL YOU KNOW this Thursday at 7pm at the Railway Club (back room).

You are encouraged to don your most wicked attire (devil horns, pointed tails, fiery red). We’ll have some sinister sartorial supplies on hand to help you get in on the devil-y revelry.

Reading and signing by Jenn Farrell. Books available for $16 CDN (cash at event). You can also pick up a copy (or another copy) of Sugar Bush & Other Stories. Beautiful books, searing fiction, moderate evil!

Join us and local authors as we confess our secret passion for Judith Krantz, our forbidden lust for Ken Follett, our unslakeable thirst for Josephine Hart and undead-themed updates of old Bronte Sisters novels.

Yes, it’s time for a party to celebrate our favorite Beach Reads!

Local authors are strongly encouraged to attend and proudly introduce us to any Beach Reads they’ve written, from thrillers to erotica. But I’m allergic to Open Mic Nights, so I doubt there will be many readings; I was traumatized by a wandering sestina artiste as a youngster and have never recovered.

Dress: beachy or bitchy, your choice!

As always, $20 buys you dinner and a drink and some of the finest literary company around! Choice of four entrees: entree salad, bangers and mash, fish and chips, or vegetarian pasta.

In honour of Zombie Awareness Month, we will be hosting a discussion of the literature of the reanimated as our May event. What better way to celebrate the ripening Summer than to feast our minds on the ravening necronauts which have brought us so much pleasure over the aeons?

Attendees are invited to bring their favorite piece of zombie literature for reading: poems, screenplays (not the WHOLE thing, though!), short stories, short-short stories, and particularly haikus in the original Japanese are all welcome.

Note that salt-free menu options are available for the zombies in attendance.

Dress: Zombie or victim. Please, let’s keep it pure: no bloody vampires, for once!

Please check your weapons with the hostess.

In the event that ninjas materialize, there will be a rumble between ninjas and zombies to settle that question once and for all. Five bucks on the zombies.
